Jewels In The Rough

A mild La Niña weather pattern brings drought conditions to the Llano Estacado and keeps much of the Eastern New Mexico High Plains vegetation nearly lifeless. Tentative exploratory shoots and diminutive versions of foliage and flowers dot the dormant landscape. Thunderstorms of summer will write the next chapter of survival. The prairie ecosystem does have survival specialists--jewels in the rough.--which take advantage of trace moisture left by meager snow drifts and pooling of sparse rainfall.  My challenge is to find them on my Easter Sunday morning treasure hunt.
