White-Lined Sphinx Moth

While exploring the northern escarpment of the Llano Estacado plain I wander into a chest-deep patch of American Star Thistle (centaurea americana). The flowers are an irresistible invitation to nectar seeking insects. Tout de suite a gathering of a dozen or more White-lined Sphinx Moths (hyles lineata) takes a hold of my senses and emotions. They flutter restlessly from flower to flower, then hover and probe the cream colored centers for precious nectar to sustain their high energy life styles. Aerial refueling endeavors are achievable due to a long, extendable proboscis which they curl under their bodies during flight. Their five-inch wingspans, stout bodies, and hover behavior resemble the exuberant dances of hummingbirds in flight.
