Hill Country Nessie

On a road trip home from Pflugerville TX across the rolling hills just south of Lampasas, Texas we spot dark ripples in the prairie grasses. Overcast skies add the right touch of uncertainty to the sixty-four-thousand dollar question. Is it folk art or a creature of flesh, blood, and bones? The murky light plays tricks on our eyes. What is it?

We soon discover it’s a common sighting of what locals affectionately call the “Texas Hill Country Nessie.” I manage to snap a few images before she disappears in the windblown grasses. We later find out the local citizenry that your best chance for a sighting is to sit quietly and wait in the roadside brush, mid morning on an overcast day.
