Life In The Moment

City lights illuminate the low cloud cover. The night air carries a hint of humidity and whiffs of smoke from hearths stir primal memories. The chilled breath of the prairie night portends snow. The prairie and its denizens thirst for it. Ranchers and farmers would give eyeteeth for a significant snowfall. What will daylight reveal on the Llano Estacado?

Dawn brings to light scant evidence of White Owl Woman's overnight passage through our high plains neighborhood. She leaves only a token of white eiderdown to mark her journey into the Texas Panhandle and other destinations to the east of our tableland hamlet.

By mid-morning the meager snow accumulations melt. For the time being the precious moisture provides a measure of relief to the arid environs. Its impact on quenching our two-year drought is minimal. Snow showers continue well into the day amidst bittersweet sighs of elation and disappointment from urban and rural dwellers on New Mexico's slice of the Llano Estacado.

Undaunted by the hints of pessimism creeping into the attitudes of his human pals, Cooper takes time to frolic in the white stuff blanketing prairie wilds and grounds at our abode. He relishes each moment. He teaches by example. I take a deep breath and remind myself to enjoy this moment in time. For what is life, but a finite number of sojourns from one moment to the next. Each moment is my life. Each moment is a miracle.
