Cold Embraces

Last night before surrendering to cozy comforters, down pillows, and dreamscapes I succumb to the appeal of nature's softer side--snow flurries carried on arctic currents. Her cold embrace of winter night beckons. I long for her assault on my senses. My armor are a woolen sherpa hat and down jacket. My weapon a flashlight. I raise my light saber skyward. The brilliant beam slices into the endless firmament. I proclaim victory as my gentle adversary surrenders her crystal minions. They descend the path of light and caress my face in submission then settle on the expanse of the slumbering realm.

At first light I cannot resist the call of the wild. Pray tell, what enchantment have last night’s amiable northern invaders spread across the tablelands of the Llano Estacado? Cooper senses my high spirits. His hurly-burly demeanor fuels my excitement. I don some well-worn cold weather gear and we’re out the door. We step into biting 21°F temperatures, penetrating northerly winds, and horizontal snow showers. "Whoa!"

Unwilling to let the harsh weather conditions deter his romp in the snow, my copper-colored canine marauder sets a blistering pace. Within minutes we scoot into the windswept prairie. While I try to keep wind-driven snow out of my eyes, Cooper streaks across the white down blanket of virgin snow--dog paradise. I make several attempts to capture his exuberance with my digital light catching device. The near-blizzard conditions foil every attempt. Nevertheless I lock horns with the bitter conditions and bleak environment. My struggle unleashes primal beasts within the civilized reaches of my heart and soul. I join Cooper in a carefree frolic across the snow covered prairie. Time becomes meaningless. An hour later I head home invigorated by my wrestling match with Mother Nature--"yippie-ki-yay!"

Denied image making opportunities on the open prairie inspire me to satisfy documentary and creative urges with photos of street and more intimate snow scenes near our humble abode. The tapestries White Owl Woman’s icy minions weave are magical.

Late Autumn Mists

Minuscule ice pellets and freezing mizzle veil the prairie horizon. An eerie hush exaggerated by the moisture-laden atmosphere hangs over the Llano Estacado plain. The absence of even the faintest breeze bodes well for a comfortable outing, despite 26°F temperatures.

Nothing stirs in the Llano biome. Fog condenses into liquid gems on dry vegetation and deepens the hues of autumn straw. Graminoid florae prepare for the next seeding hoedown with prairie winds. Out of left field a hover of crows drifts by in stealth mode without a hint of their ordinarily raucous chatter.  A Northern Harrier launches from its airy perch, sets wings and glides silently into the ethereal autumn mists.

Just ahead Cooper tussles with damp, shoulder-high seas of grass in pursuit of tantalizing scents and sounds. A frosty coating of moisture pearls highlights his ears, brow, and back. It’s time to head for shelter.

Prairie Shadows

Thirty-seven degrees Fahrenheit, twenty-five mile per hour northeasterly winds, and a motley brew of cloud cover greet Cooper and me en route to the immutable shortgrass prairie of the Llano Estacado plain. A somber cloak smothers the prairie palette. Penetrating, razor-sharp, icy claws of Old Man Winter’s henchman the North Wind ripple layers of my clothing and wreak havoc with exposed skin on hands and face. Cooper seems unaffected by the wind’s mischief.

Moments later the early winter sun breaches the eastern horizon. Capriciously the amber tinted clouds part and entice the light to pour into the plain. Clusters of yucca bayonets punctuate the prairie and cast fickle shadows into the withered vegetation. Our fleeting shadows join the joyous dance of awakening. Cooper’s red coat is ablaze.

Barely perceptible flight calls of geese draw my attention into the gray skies. Long shifting curved lines and wedges of Canadian Geese emerge from the direction of the rising sun. The noisy bunches appear intent on traveling in a southwesterly direction. They understand the cold whispers of the north wind--polar air masses and snow are on the way.

Cherished Light

It's nearly night, oh cherished light.
Your sojourn ends in much delight.
Warm hues and moonlight, now allies,
cradle your starlight until sunrise.

Painted Lady's Last Dance

Baby blue skies, wispy clouds, and sunshine belie the razor sharp bite of late autumn winds. Bone-chilling night temperatures cede their grip upon our Southern Great Plains hamlet at a glacial pace. Mother Nature’s kaleidoscopic autumn reign has nearly run its course. But she will not slip quietly into winter slumber. She insists on a grand finale of splashy regalia, frolic, and cutting a rug. The painted lady embarks on her last dance.
