Kiss Me Quick

Tiny blossoms of the ground-hugging Shaggy Portulaca beckon pollinators with promises of quick, lipstick-red kisses. They are an unexpected treat for my senses. I cannot resist a few moments of admiration for this drought tolerant succulent, this nemesis of back yard gardeners. It spreads like gossip. Chismes is its Spanish moniker. Wind-borne water from a nearby crop circle or a summer thundershower is all this edible herb needs to burst into green carpets of reddish to purple blooms.
Cooper does not share my reverence for the diminutive blossoms and urges indulgence in some fun and games, the real reason for our morning sojourn on the Llano Estacado. I oblige with several tosses of a softball. However, Cooper is not a big fan of temperatures over 70°F and soon looks for shady respites. At 82°F it’s simply too hot to chase the ball. We head for the shade of a lone Siberian Elm. I rub water from my canteen across Cooper’s head and muzzle. His demeanor signals appreciation. Refreshed we head home.
