Life After The Deluge

Gales of wind, rolling thunder, lightning, and copious rains descend upon the Llano Estacado at sunset. Invoked by prayer, yet dreaded, they join forces to shape an ominous tempest intent on wreaking havoc. An hourglass runs its course. Reluctantly nature’s fury bids a gentle adieu on distant whispers of answered prayers.

First light of day finds blue rivulets of liquid manna in wagon ruts snaking down ranch roads. Yesterday’s dust is red ooze. A palpable new rhythm lingers on the prairie winds. It portends renewal. Opportunistic drought survivors, cholla and prickly pear cacti, recharge depleted water reserves. Wildflowers rejuvenate and rouse insects with tempting promises of nectar. Harvester ants resume their tireless collection and caching of seeds.

I pause and invite the renewal into my heart. My spirit takes wing. Cooper senses the energy and reacts with a spree of exuberant dashes into the drenched prairie. I have not seen such animated bursts of speed since spring. He stops to rest and cozies up to the damp earth--a true aficionado of the gift of rain.
