Llano Insectarium I - Midsummer

Except for solitary Tarantula Hawks perusing milkweed flowers, Western Meadowhawks darting through the morning air, and Red Harvester Ants retrieving precious food treasures insect life is conspicuously sparse on the open prairie. They opt to sit out this summer of ferocious heat, sparse rains, and meager nectar sources. Still The Llano Estacado does not disappoint. I delight in the buzz of rapidly beating bee wings, the elegant fairy dances of damsel flies, the colorful flutter of butterfly wings. The occasional impact of a grasshopper against my face draws gasps of joy.
